The Seat of Medical Education

Teaching Hospital
Singapore General Hospital (SGH) has been the seat of medical education since the first medical and nursing schools were established in Singapore in the early 1900s. Many generations of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals have been nurtured by the hospital. With the emergence of specialty departments from the 1960s, the hospital began to take on a more prominent role in postgraduate medical education and is today one of the principal training grounds for specialists and the first postgraduate hospital.

Undergraduate Teaching
SGH bears a significant portion of the undergraduate teaching workload, with about 48% of SGH medical staff holding appointment as teaching faculty. SGH also collaborates with the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School whose biomedical research graduate programme aims to produce highly trained clinician-scientists to support Singapore's biomedical sciences initiatives. Besides NUS, clinical staff from SGH also provide part-time teaching faculty for the Nanyang Polytechnic which trains nurses and paramedical staff including radiographers and therapists. SGH is the major clinical hospital for nursing and paramedical education in Singapore as well as the Asia Pacific region.

Postgraduate Education
As the country's main postgraduate teaching hospital, SGH accounts for the placement and supervision of 68% of basic and 58% of advanced postgraduate trainees in Singapore. The recognised standing and reputation of the SGH Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI) and SGH Postgraduate Allied Health Institute underlines the significance of the hospital's role as a teaching institution.
