A Drama-based Workshop on Effective Interpersonal Skills @ the Workplace by Singapore Polytechnic & SingHealth Academy

SingHealth Academy and Singapore Polytechnic are pleased to organize a two-day interactive and hands-on workshop for colleagues across the SingHealth Cluster (doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and administrators) who manage or interact with stakeholders like patients, care-givers and colleagues. It aims to equip these staff with effective interpersonal skills to:

  • Understand the motivation of people from different walks of life and with different needs.
  • Manage their own emotions when interacting with different people
  • Appreciate different communication styles
  • Explore potential responses to conflict situations

The course will cover the following topics:
(a) Emotional Responses

  • Understanding the role of emotions in a communication process
  • Recognise the importance of managing one’s emotions and recognising emotions in others
  • Identify emotions experienced by self and by another party
  • Evaluate one’s own emotions in common workplace situations

(b) Common Situations in the Workplace

  • Identify the common workplace communication situations for healthcare professionals
  • Understanding and analyse how stakeholders’ background, age, work and life experience, etc, affect their motivation in a communication situation
  • Consider how effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills can be applied when giving negative information and feedback to patients, care-givers, and other stakeholders

(c) Conflict Management

  • Identify the factors leading to communication breakdown and conflict (including socio-cultural sensibilities)
  • Understand and explore options when responding to a conflict situation
  • Explore various options in the context of workplace situations
