SMU-SingHealth Graduate Diploma in Healthcare Management & Leadership

Course Objectives
A collaboration between Singapore Health Services (SingHealth) and Singapore Management University (SMU), this programme aims to provide clinicians and healthcare professionals with the necessary business knowledge and skills to excel in healthcare management and business leadership. Participants will be adequately prepared for key administrative roles through this rigorous programme conducted by leading physician-educators from SingHealth and faculty from SMU.


Course Description

The course comprises the following 6 modules:

Strategy & Global Healthcare Landscape
This module aims to cover on competitive strategies and the key theories that are relevant to healthcare settings. It takes on a particular interest on the complex Singapore Health System from a political philosophical, financing and delivery point of view as well. Students will also be taught on making strategic choices and on executing and implementing change.

Leadership & People Management
This module provides a holistic view on leadership and students will be taught on skills to manage one self and others.  This module also examines on how to effectively manage change from top down through leveraging on the culture and also covers topics on conflict management, motivation, mentoring and coaching. Lastly, the rising trend of learning organisations will also be covered in this module.

Aligning Healthcare Strategy & Customer Value Delivery
It is important for us to understand how to link high-performing microsystems to patient safety such as having good healthcare teams as part of our essential operational strategy. A good marketing strategy and creating value for our business are deemed as important to deliver good customer value. Lastly, students will be taught on how to value-add hospital service experiences to achieve high customer satisfaction.

Healthcare Economics & Financial Management
This module will apply economic analysis to Healthcare and covers topics such as behavioural economics in healthcare and market analysis for healthcare industries. Under financial management, topics such as cost behaviours, budgeting and variance analysis will be focused on.  Students will be taught on how to the topic of understanding financial statements and infuse financials into clinical services decision-making as well.

Operations Excellence & Quality Management
This module aims to explore on the value added processes in healthcare and the matching of supply with demand in services. More efficient care delivery by improving systems and controls, leveraging on IT advances is also focused on. Important topics such as patient safety, risk management, quality planning and performance management are also covered in this module.

Risk, Crisis & Media Management
This module covers topics on managing our complex healthcare system which includes understanding the whole risk cycle, from identification to assessment to ERM (Enterprise Risk Management) and BCM (Business Continuity Management). This will in turn cover topics such as organisational stewardship and an understanding of different examples of risks that may be present under various risk domains. Lastly, media management will be covered to give students a first hand knowledge on the “dos” and “don’ts” when it comes to facing the media.

Course curriculum requires a total commitment of 160-180 hours.
