It is widely recognised that media-rich tools inspire higher learning achievement. With this in mind, SingHealth’s Digital Media & eLearning (DMEL) department seeks to conceptualise audio-visual media productions, develop eLearning platforms, and utilise new and emerging digital technology to augment healthcare education. The DMEL department manages 2 units:
1. Digital Media Video Production Unit
Furnished with professional facilities and equipment to produce broadcast quality productions, our team of media professionals provides consultancy, research and production management services to optimise effectiveness in communication efforts and education programmes.
The Unit offers the following digital media production services:
- Instructional Video Design
- Script Writing and Storyboarding
- Consulting and Production Management
- Full Multi Camera Video Production with Lighting and Sound
- Professional editing (AVID)
- Animation and Graphic Design
- Multimedia Authoring, Interactivity and Production
- Streaming Media Encoding and DVD/CD-ROM menu design
- Quality Assurance and Testing
2. eLearning Unit
In consultation with doctors, faculty, medical professionals and various content experts throughout the SingHealth Cluster, the eLearning unit designs a range of online education tools to enhance the learning experience.
Based on stated training objectives and requirements, the unit will develop customised tutorials that can be accessed online, via CD-ROMs or the HELIX, SingHealth’s Blackboard based Learning Management System.

- Multimedia Authoring (using Macromedia, Adobe, Techsmith and Articulate) and Production

HELIX (Healthcare E-Learning Information Exchange)
Launched in 2009, HELIX is an online portal equipped with a host of features to enhance learning effectiveness. Designed for self-improvement via modular learning, various healthcare training providers can make use of the HELIX to offer SingHealth staff online education programmes.
Key features of the HELIX include:
· Pervasive reach within SingHealth
· Extensive compilation of shared resources including diagnosis guides, human
resource policies and online forums
· Measurable results to track usage and participants’ individual performance
· Useful assessment tools such as quizzes
Leveraging on technology for further development
Apart from meeting current training needs, the DMEL department’s strategic plans for the future include adopting media technology to enhance communication within SingHealth, facilitating education through Information and Communication Technologies, developing Interactive Classroom Technology, and establishing the framework and infrastructure for distance learning.
